A VERY BYG STORY

I had luck during my last Japan travel, thanks to my lovely girlfriend, to find an obscure records shop on a big city suburb. The type of shop that seems to remains the same since the seventies! These odd guys out there managed to put their hands on a old US distributor jazz stock. Amongst other were a large amount of original BYG ACTUEL records. This is the records we propose on this page, sorry there is no others from the catalogue so don't ask! Because we really like this label in frenchattack, not only for the music, but also for the incredibly nice cover art and design, a great influence for us, I think it's time to know more about it right? We didn't succeed to meet one of the creator, but here's some infos it would be cool to know.

The BYG label was founded by a trio: Jacques Bisceglia, Jean-Luc Young, and Jean Georgakarakos, so now you can easily understand why the label is called BYG.
ACTUEL was first a magazine, created in 1967, then they created the label. The first goal was to reissue US jazz records, mostly from the SAVOY catalogue, but soon it became one of the most avant garde and innovative platform for the movement called THE NEW THING, a new approach of jazz that would soon more known as free jazz. The most impressive and well known artist of the label is of course ARCHIE SHEPP, who found in France the creativity and political minded spirit that was no longer present in the United States, and several other american jazzmen followed him and created intense and innovative piece of music with avant garde french jazzmen. Most of the BYG ACTUEL sessions were produced by CLAUDE DELCLOO, a famous producer that always seemed to work as a link between the genre, as you find him as a producer for adventurous records and bands such as CANE & ABLE or FULL MOON ENSEMBLE. It's not a surprise when the label makes a curve to progressive rock at the end in 1969, releasing mythical band like GONG or AME SON. The sessions were usually recorded in the great STUDIO DAVOUT, home of several incredible french records.
The shooting star label took end soon after the Amougies Festival. This festival was the ideas of the BYG bosses, and should take place in Paris, being an incredible event for avant garde music. But because of the 68 riots in Paris, the french government refused a so political venue, and it finally took place in Amougies, Belgium. The festival suffered several technical problems and became the financial issue that took down the label. Despite its very short period of time (67-69), this is really one of the most cult and creative label you could find in France during this period!

DON CHERRY – "Mu" First Part (Byg Actuel 1)
The first mythical reference of the label! Don Cheery the man orchestra (Trumpet, Piano, Flute..) teams up with Ed Balckwell who provide the drumming.

SUNNY MURRAY – Hommage To Africa (Byg Actuel 3)
A beautiful piece of music. Sonny Murray is coming with the ART ENSEMBLE OF CHICAGO members, plus Archie Shepp and Alan Silva. The long spiritual "Suns Of Africa", with the delicate hypnotic chant of Jeanne Lee is blessing the first side. 15 minutes of cosmic jazz a la Pharaoh Sanders. On Bside "RIP" is based on a rhythmic loop led by the horns... intense!

ARCHIE SHEPP – Yasmina, A Black Woman (Byg Actuel 4)
"Yasmina" begins with that stunning modal bass, then the piano theme (incredible Dave Burrell performance at the end!), and the horns that killing you. The Art Ensemble Of Chicago personnel strikes again. Of course Mister Shepp solo are the cherry on the cake...

ARCHIE SHEPP – Poem For Malcom (Byg Actuel 11)
Before being the famous sax player, Shepp hesitated between music and writings, as he was also a poem and theatre writer. On this record the reunion is double: he uses both of his talents on the intense spoken words "Poem For Malcom", and he also invites people from the two universe: straight bop jazz (Philly Joe Jones, Hank Mobley) and "new" jazz (Burton Greene, Alan Silva..) players.

ALAN SILVA AND HIS CELESTRIAL COMMUNICATION ORCHESTRA - Luna Surface (Byg Actuel 12)
One of the most radical and extreme record of the serie. "From the Luna Surface" is a long improvised track led by the violin of Alan Silva. No drums, just a maelstrom of strings, sometimes dominated by the solos of Dave Burrell, Beb Guerin or BERNARD VITET.

PAUL BLEY – Ramblin' (Byg Actuel 13)
Half of the tracks here are written by Carla Bley or Annette Peacock. But my favourite here is the Paul Bley own composition “Mazatalon”.
Cover EX (alternative plain white cover, no blue pattern like showed) / vinyl EX  15€

ACTING TRIO – S/T (Byg Actuel 14)
Another totally experimental trio. Extreme improvisation by Philippe Mate on sax tenor, Andre Maurice (on a out-tuned Cello) and... JEAN PHILIPPE SABAR on piano, the french porn OST master and responsible for the MARIAGE COLLECTIF soundtrack. The three musicians go very far, using their instruments in all way possible (the Cello as a percussion!). Obviously interesting.

ANTHONY BRAXTON – S/T (Byg Actuel 15)
Strange improvising experience inspired both by free jazz and contemporary music. The large amount of instruments used by every band members is impressive: behind the "classic" instrument chaos, you can hear siren, so-called sound machines, mouth organ, darbouka, logs...

JACQUES COURSIL UNIT – Way Head (Byg Actuel 19)
Jacques Coursil played with SUN RA or FRANK WRIGHT, but despite these important experiences, this Parisian Martiniqueese native keep a strong straight jazz background. The result on this LP is a mix of serenity and tension, like calm before the storm!

DAVE BURRELL – Echo (Byg Actuel 20)

Incredible jazz session written during a jazz festival in Africa, the first time Moncur came in the mother land.
